AFTERNOON

Join a guided walking tour of Palermo this afternoon.  Throughout the tour you will see old Arab quarters hidden among the narrow lanes of the inner city, including the community of St. Clare. Admire the nude statues in the Square of Shame and the red Arabic-style domes atop the Church of the Martorana. You will also see the beautiful church, St. Joseph of Theatine and tour the iconic Cathedral of Palermo. The Royal Palace awaits afterward, where you can visit a Jewel of Arab Norman art and also the most visited monument in Sicily – the Palatine Chapel.

Depart by coach this morning to Agrigento with a stop in Monreale en route. Monreale is a picturesque hill town just outside Palermo most famous for the stunning golden mosaics in the town’s great Norman cathedral.  Take a tour of the cathedral and cloisters which are frequently cited as the island’s greatest Norman buildings.

AFTERNOON

This afternoon visit the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples), an archaeological site in Agrigento. It is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, and is a national monument of Italy. The archaeological park and landscape of the Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world with 1,300 hectares and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

THURSDAY 27 APRIL - SYRACUSE

Depart Agrigento this morning to Piazza Armerina for a tour of the Villa Romana del Casale. The villa is one of the most luxurious of its kind and sumptuous even by decadent Roman standards. It is especially noteworthy for the richness and quality of the mosaics which decorate almost every room; they are the finest mosaics in situ anywhere in the Roman world.

AFTERNOON

Continue on to Syracuse this afternoon with a stop in the ceramic town of Caltagirone en route.   Caltagirone is one of the most lively Baroque towns in central Sicily. It’s known in Italy as “The city of Sicilian ceramics” due to its thousand-year-old tradition. See the main landmark of the city, the 142-step monumental Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, built from 1608 in the old part of the town. The peculiarity is that each step is decorated with different hand-decorated ceramics, using styles and figures derived from the millennial tradition of pottery making.

Morning conference sessions followed by a walking tour of Ortigia, the historical heart of Syracuse.

AFTERNOON

This afternoon, visit the Syracuse Archaeological Park.  This vast archaeological park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and contains Syracuse’s greatest concentration of ruins, the most famous of which is its Ancient Greek theatre. There is also a Roman amphitheatre, a sanctuary to Apollo and an altar to Sicilian King Hieron II. The impressive remains of this ancient city date as far back as the eighth century BC.

Join a guided walking tour of Taormina this afternoon.  Taormina has become famous around the world not only for its beautiful scenery and views of Etna but for the extravagant and famous visitors who have been here such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein. Visit the Teatro Greco, a well-preserved Ancient Greek amphitheatre set in a breathtaking location with an unbeatable view of Mt Etna and the beautiful coastline of the Ionian Sea. See the beautiful Palazzo Corvaja and the Odeon, a small Roman theatre and walk through Vicolo Stretto and Corso Umberto. Reach Piazza IX Aprile, the main square with a magnificent view of the majestic profile of Etna and the coast of the Bay of Giardini Naxos stretching up the hill to the Greek amphitheatre.
