Sunday 7 May - Arrive Tuscany

7

MORNING

We say farewell to Rome this morning and head to the stunning central region of Tuscany. En route we will make two stops in the towns of Montepulciano and Pienza including an introductory guided tour in each.  Montepulciano is a medieval and Renaissance hill town of rare beauty and is famous for not one, but two excellent wines. Pienza is a perfect example of the Renaissance concept of an ‘ideal city’ that is a planned townscape. This tiny village stands atop a hill with extraordinary views of the Val d’Orica Valley.

AFTERNOON

There is time for lunch at leisure at one of the stops before a late afternoon arrival at the Artimino Resort.

Today you can join an inclusive tour to the countryside through the Chianti area. Explore at your own pace or join in one of the optional activities on offer in San Gimignano and Siena at your own cost (details to be provided in the Optional Tour program).  San Gimignano is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and towers that rise above all the other buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley. At the height of its glory, San Gimignano’s patrician families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power and although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance.

Siena is reportedly Italy’s loveliest medieval city and at its heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo – known worldwide for the famous Palio run, a horse race run around the piazza two times every summer (as seen in the James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace).

AFTERNOON

The tour will return to the Artimino Estate late afternoon.
